Getting ready for the Ontario 2025 provincial elections

Sophia Andrew-Joiner running in Ottawa West – Nepean

Sophia is a passionate community activist and former Parliamentary Assistant dedicated to improving public transit, affordable housing, and healthcare while fighting for Ottawa’s most vulnerable.

Page in Toronto

Sophia is a dedicated Green. Already in 2018, when she was a 13 years old Grade 8 student at Muskoka Christian School, was selected to serve as a legislative page. During her term of duty, Sophia acted as a messenger on the floor of the legislative chamber in Toronto, met key parliamentary figures and learned about Ontario’s parliamentary system of government.

Global Climate Week

In 2019, Sophia was quoted in the Huntsville Forester asking a simple question: “If you can wait in a McDonald’s drive-thru for 20 minutes, why can’t you take 20 seconds to throw your garbage away and use a recycling bin?” The then 15 year old was one of the speakers at an informative rally hosted by Muskoka Power of Many at the Huntsville townhall as part of the Global Climate Week.

Two consecutive summer jobs as Parliamentary Assistant

Her volunteering on the hill for Green Party of Canada leader and MP Elizabeth May led to two consecutive summer jobs as Parliamentary Assistant. In this role, Sophia wrote letters to several ministers, researched and submitted consultations, communicated regularly with Elizabeth’s constituents, attended committees and provided assistance on the ground to the MP as needed. Aside from work, she cares for her many houseplants and decompresses with a book in the park.

Ban fossil fuel advertising

For Sophia, Ottawa has provided her with the opportunities to embrace her passion for community activism. From door-knocking and petitioning to ban fossil fuel advertising, fundraising for an Indigenous land back legal trust and volunteering on the Hill, Sophia has dedicated her time outside of her studies to contributing to the Ottawa community.

Goals for the Ottawa community

Sophia’s passion extends into her goals for the Ottawa community, which include:

  • addressing the housing affordability crisis by listening to those most vulnerable, such as students and those on fixed-incomes;
  • pressing for intergovernmental cooperation on food prices;
  • increasing supports for halfway homes and emergency shelters;
  • opposing the privatization of healthcare and
  • improving Ottawa’s lack of consistent and quality public transit;
